My Experience With Tattlers

When I first came across information about Tattler reusable lids, my curiosity was piqued. The idea of never having to buy lids again seemed highly appealing, especially considering that I can hundreds of jars of food every year. It didn’t take much calculation to realize that using these lids could result in long-term savings. With this in mind, I decided to purchase some boxes of Tattler lids and gaskets and began my experimentation.

Coincidentally, on the day I first used Tattler lids, I was working on a canning project involving ground beef. Canning meat is a common practice for me, as I appreciate having readily available meal ingredients for those busy evenings or when I simply want a quick meal. However, unlike fruits and vegetables that I can grow for myself, meat is something I must purchase with my hard-earned money.

Given my experience and knowledge in canning, I assumed that using Tattler lids would be a breeze. But, oh, how wrong I was. I filled nine pint jars with ground beef and proceeded to place the lids…..

Dill Pickle RelishDill Pickle Relish

Black Berry Jam With Liquid Pectin

4 cups of crushed blackberries.¼ cup of lemon juice.7 cups of sugar.1 pouch of liquid pectin.

Yields approximately 4 pints.

Dill Pickle Relish

8 lbs. of pickling cucumbers.½ cup of salt.2 tsp. of turmeric.1 quart of water.1 lb. of onions.⅓ cup of sugar.2 T. of dill seed.1 quart of 5% vinegar (white wine vinegar gives a good taste).

Yields approximately 7 pints.

Hot Chili Salsa

3 quarts of tomatoes, skinned, cored, and chopped.2 quarts of chili peppers, chopped*.2½ cups of onions, peeled and chopped.1 cup of vinegar (5% strength).3 tsp. of salt.½ tsp. of pepper.

Makes about 7 pints
